Definition:

Cookie: Cookies allow websites to store simple variables on your computer. These variable are passed back to the website when further requests to the site are made. Cookies are the only way to provide persistence to the non-persistent HTTP protocol, essentially marking a particular visitor as unique to differentiate between and "recognize" site visitors. Cookies are part of the HTTP protocol, but are often referred to as "web cookies."
