By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Benchmark - An evaluation of how fast computer software will run. Often, the time to complete a task is measured or the number of times a task can be completed in a set time. Benchmarks are crucial in deciding which of multiples approaches to a problem will perform the best without integrating such solutions into a larger piece of software and testing the overall performance.
